There are 78 movies from 39 countries in the programme of 9th FMFS that will take place in three locations from 3rd to 11th June, in which there will be five regional and five Croatian premieres as the part of feature film programme. These are the numbers that show that Split will be the centre of Mediterranean film world in the first two weekends of June.
On today's press conference in movie theater "Zlatna Vrata" we revealed all movie treats prepared for citizens of Split and their guests during 9 days of the festival. Among them there is a winner of this year's Berlin Film Festival "Fuocoamare" by the famous documentarist Gianfranco Rosi.
This is an extraordinary and extremely important documentary and completely deserved Golden Bear. The film follows everyday life of island Lampedusa through the eyes of a 10 year old boy and the real sufferings that the emigrants have to go through to arrive to Europe by sea. The popular theme follows also "La Route d'Istanbul", Algerian-French film about a Belgian woman whose daughter joins ISIS in Siria. In front of the numerous viewership of the movie theater "Bacvice" we will screen a documentary "Turizam" by Tonći Gaćina from Split- revealed the director of FMFS Alen Munitić, besides the already announced movie hits, Italian "L'attesa" with an Oscar winner Juliete Binoche in leading role and two French movies starring Isabelle Hupert. For the first one, "L'avenir" the director and screen writer Mia Hansen- Løve was awarded with Silver Bear on Berlin International Film Festival, and the other one, "Asphalte" by Samuel Benchetrit arrives from the Cannes programme.
One of the most interesting titles of this year's festival is certainly a Greek comedy "Chevalier" by Athina Rachel Tsangari that won an award on London Film Festival. FMFS will start with Spanish "A cambio de nada" by Daniel Guzmán who won Goya award for the best debute film. As a part of the programme there is also a winner of ZagrebDox by audience choice "Au Crépuscule d'une Vie" by Sylvain Biegeleisen, then the controversial "Ivy" by Turkish Tolgo Karacelik that arrives to Split after Sundance although it has been censored in its country and from Turkey there is also "Abluka" that already won 11 awards and a Golden Lion nomination in Venice.
The last year year practice continues in which we, besides the extraordinary movie titles that are competing for the main award "Udica" (eng. The hook,op.prev.), also screen a few of them in the programme "outside the competition". British-Romanian "Chuck Norris vs. Communism" will definitely attract attention, and this year the curtain of FMFS drops with a Brasilian Oscar nominee "Que Horas Ela Volta?" that was pronnounced as the best movie in Berlin by the picky audience last year.
As until now, we are also focusing on a short Croatian film programme, called "Ješke", but starting this year, the winner will receive the money award.
Our partner, the company from Split, "Uje" which we are cooperating with on development of a new project, will provide the money award for the winner and that definitely emphasizes the importance of this category- said Munitić. Among "Ješke" there are many films that have already won different awards all around the world, such as"Picnic", "Belladonna", "The Beast", but also the premiere of Šimun Šitum "Thin air", new animated film by Veljko Popović- "Planemo" and the documentary "Kino otok".
The Greek director Thanos Anastopoulos is coming from Cannes where his new film was screened last year, as the part of the project "The 5C Project Cine-Caravan" that is runned also in four other states of south-east Europe by "Balkan cultural centre". The project comprises screenings, workshops and seminars for young audience, students and everyone who is interested.
Among plenty additional events, we would like to point out the first official presentation of the new programme "Škola u kinu" (eng. Education in cinema, op.prev.), shared project of Croatian audiovisual centre and Art-kino from Rijeka, that includes free screenings of Croatian classical films, such as "Vuk samotnjak" and "Družba Pere Kvržice"
Besides the standard locations, summer movie theater "Bacvice" and movie theater "Zlatna Vrata", the biggest organisational news of this year's FMFS is the new location for free screenings of short films- the legendary "Kino Tesla Terrace"
The cooperation with "Ekran" brought a new idea this year, so we are moving our equipment to this new and wonderful location in the city centre that will surely attract all fans of short films. We have nothing but treats- Oscar nominees, winners of Cannes and Berlin, participants in Cartoon d'Or programme, that will be screened in cooperation with "Animafest"- director revealed the news and thanked to all the sponsors and partners at the end of the press conference and also the reporters that follow FMFS through the entire years as well as "Kino Mediteran", "KineDok" and "Moje splitsko kino"
